Giving Gratitude Before Moving Forward

Although this article was first posted in December, 2010 it really is quite timeless.

gratitude for lifeAs the year 2010 ends and 2011 begins many of us may be dealing with concerns about our health, a troubled relationship, dire financial circumstances, or other difficulties in our lives. And sometimes those troubles can be overwhelming. It can be hard to see the silver lining around the dark clouds we are living in.

All of us have to deal with our own demons in life. Unfortunately none of us can escape from them all. But each of us can look at our lives and find something to be grateful for. I know it’s a cliché to say that if you have your health you have something to be grateful for, but it really is true. I mean, consider the alternatives.

When it comes to unhappy relationships we do have options. Many times relationships can be saved. There are countless programs that can help. Of course, some relationships simply do not work out. And in the end, this is sometimes for the best. Getting out of an unhappy relationship can be a real cause for celebration because that means you can move forward with the rest of your life. But I know failed relationships can be a very difficult thing to deal with.

My first marriage was somewhat of a joke. When I first married I was young and really didn’t realize the magnitude of what a life commitment was all about – and I’m sure the guy I married didn’t either. Luckily I later met someone that seemed to be my soul mate – we’ve been together for the long term – with ups and downs and even with a separation thrown in, but we’ve survived. I give gratitude regularly that I stuck things out with him because there was a time when I was ready to give up. I truly believe that if you can survive some rocky times in your relationship your bonds can be strengthened by the shared experience.

As the year ends I think the economy is perhaps what worries me the most. I know that my husband and I can do okay financially but it is my children and grandchildren that I agonize about. I wonder what their futures will be like if things don’t change. I guess I will just have to trust that things will get better and that my kids and grand kids are strong enough to build a successful future for themselves. And I can be grateful that I am in a position to help my kids and grandkids as much as possible.

You may have noticed through my posts and the things that I support that I’m an animal lover. The cruelty to animals is another thing that I hope changes in 2011. I hate to think of all the animals throughout the world that are treated so horribly. On the up side of things, the cruelty to animals has gained attention over the years and because of that it happens less and less. Another thing to be grateful for! :)

As the year ends I want to give gratitude for all that I do have. There are so many things to be grateful for. I have truly been blessed. The best things in life are the people we love and the bonds we have with those individuals. I happen to have a wonderful family that I love dearly.

From there you can begin breaking down what you have in life into things that are somewhat less important. For example, I’ve never gone without food or had to worry about a place to sleep at night. But if it ever comes to that, as long as I have the love of my family I think I will be okay.

So what about you – what are you grateful for?
